Frequently Asked
Questions
What is Vision 2017?
Vision 2017 was an outcome of SUBA's annual retreat in November 2006.
It is the community's vision statement. It's what the community
wants to see happen in east Salinas by 2017. More importantly,
it's a vision - a dream - that SUBA and other community stakeholders
committed to work towards over the next ten years.
What is The New Alisal of Salinas?
The phrase "The New Alisal of Salinas" is a placeholder
for the community the visionaries hope to build over the next decade.
"New" refers to something significantly different and improved over what
is there today. "Alisal" refers to the history and culture and
context of our diverse community. The visionaries added the words
"of Salinas" because they felt it was important to remind the world that
east Salinas is in fact an integral part of the City.
What makes Vision 2017 a movement?
The Community! It's a movement because the power and
momentum for change comes from a group of like-minded people moving
forward together for the purpose of achieving common goals and desired
outcomes. This movement is somewhat unique in that the energy
behind the movement comes from a joint community improvement effort
involving a mix of community stakeholders, local government, educational
institutions, private non-profit organizations, and more than 600
businesses.
How can I get involved in the Vision 2017
movement?
You can get involved simply by doing something at your
home or in your neighborhood that helps to create a better quality of
life in east Salinas. Here are some examples: Picking up a scrap
of paper and throwing it in a garbage can or recycle bin; reporting or
painting over graffiti in your neighborhood; getting to know your
neighbors; getting to know the public agencies that provide services in
your area; reporting suspicious activities to the police department; and
sprucing up the exterior of your home and making it safer for you, your
family, and your community.
If you're interested in becoming directly involved in the Initiative,
you may want to join one or more of the committees that are currently
working on the implementation of strategies that will move us closer to
Vision 2017. For more information, please call the SUBA office at
(831) 796-0896.
Remember, we all play a critical role in providing the fuel for the
movement.
